This packaging design project came from an idea I had about a cherry blossom flavored potato chip brand. Would it taste disgusting? Probably. Was this just an excuse for me to use the color pink excessively? Maybe.

Overall, definitely a project I'd lose sleep over again any day.

Process

Kicking this project off, I first wanted to get familiar with the look that typically comes with cherry blossom products. I discovered that all these products kept to a bright and light look. I found that they mostly stuck with the concept of "freshness" while playing heavily into the nostalgic feeling of springtime associated with cherry blossom. Soft pinks and whites were the recurring theme. While that isn't a bad thing, I knew I wanted to move away from this soft visual.

Keeping that in mind, I began to sketch out the package and billboard advertisement.

"Okay, you're the target audience for this product. You love pink, you love snacks, and you're definitely into trying weird seasonal flavors - What would make you commit to purchasing these chips?" This was my inner monologue while I was designing this bag.

After some experimentation, I found myself gravitating towards a design using semi-clear packaging. Not only would this help consumers rid the fear of purchasing something they didn't pay for, I felt it also elevated the entire design overall. Seasonal products can come across as gimmicky which, while that is part of the appeal, it's also an issue.

Transparency between manufacturers and consumers is an ever growing demand; what better way to play into that than with an actually transparent package?

My goal was to incorporate a more grounded and earthy feel for this product which can be seen in the brown bordering of the chip bag. It was fun to play with the balance between playful and modern.

The final step in the process was to create a social media ad that could be seen scrolling through Instagram or Facebook.
